Institutions discovered social media marketing
I was a little confused while flming a panel of public libraries in San Leandro, California. Our production was smooth, 3 camera, lights and audio set up and I had the easiest job: wide shot. While keeping my librarians on the frame, I had time to focus on what they were actually talking about, and thats when I got suprised.
The US libraries are planning how to keep themselfs running since people are more and more on computers instead of bed reading novels. 50 year olds, aka baby boomers where telling how good experiences they have had with Nintendo Wii’s and Xboxes on their new LCD library screens.
They were talking about tweeting, facebooking, blogging and making videos and getting their reading programs on social networks. How obvious -but still not that common. Some libraries didn’t even had internet connection yet! No wonder they have cut their budget if you can’t get infromation from libraries like you used to in the 90’s.
There are also companies who promote other companies on only on internet networks. OK, I new that search engine optimization can need some skills but putting up a fan page on facebook? Isn’t social networks built so that ANYONE can enstablish themselfs? Well, I don’t mind calling myself social media expert. At least I know more than those librariens.. Our Juorut.com gossips have always been dependent on social networks and search engines and so has our other confidential projects.
So maybe Ill start my own marketing agency soon. Getting groups, institutions, companies and organizations online and visible, and making videos for them, so that they can even have their little TV channels on the web. That would make even a little corner shop to a web enterprise.. in theory.

Basics of SEO and Social media marketing are easy, and they even take you pretty far.
But to really be good at these, you need to keep yourself updated on whats happening all the time. Facebook changed its advertising rules two weeks ago, and you need to know all about that. Google is adding Twitter, Bing is adding Facebook and Wolfram Alpha.
It´s more about understanding in big scale whats going to happen, than knowing where to put your -tags

Yah. But its suprising how much you already know without realizing it. I could have done the same presentation than the marketing woman at the library, who was encouraging people into Facebook.
SEO circles in Finland are a bit more educated about the matter as you well know

It is interesting to see how social networking will be developing especially for public institutions. For example, it was on the news yesterday, that Finlands on rank 44 worldwide on “internet democracy” eg. voting and information on web.
BTW cool theme. Creative expert LMAO
